Head of Equities

Khaya is head of equities at Afena Capital and a founding partner in the firm. At Afena Capital, Khaya is responsible for managing the equity investment process, fundamental stock analysis focusing on the financials sector, and portfolio management. He has extensive experience as an analyst covering the financials, industrials and resource sectors of the JSE. Khaya holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance and Economics) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand and a Master of Science in Investment Management with distinction from City University (Cass Business School) in the UK. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder.

Prior to Afena Capital, he had worked at Investec Asset Management for five years and was portfolio manager of the Investec Growth Fund when he, along with the other founding partners, left to start Afena Capital. His eleven years of investment experience include time as an equity dealer, where he was responsible for equity execution and asset swap facilitation and execution. He also co-managed a private equity portfolio.

Khulekani is Head of Research at Afena Capital and a founding partner in the firm. Khulekani joined the investment management industry ten years ago. At Afena Capital, Khulekani is responsible for management of the firm’s research output, fundamental stock analysis focusing on the industrials sector and portfolio management of the FINDI relative portfolios.

Khulekani is no stranger to excellence after graduating top of his province (Kwa-Zulu Natal) in his matric year. He holds a Bachelor of Science (cum laude) and a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States.

Andrew is a portfolio manager at Afena Capital and a founding partner in the firm. Andrew is the portfolio manager of the Afena Capital multi asset portfolios (Managed/Balanced Fund) and the non-benchmark cognisant equity portfolios.  He is also responsible for fundamental stock analysis focusing on the resources sector.

Andrew graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Business Science degree in the special field of Finance. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder.

He has eleven years of investment experience which includes time at Investec Asset Management as sector head of small and mid cap companies, and as a portfolio manager of the Emerging Companies unit trust, and co-manager of a large value fund. He also spent time at Prudential Portfolio Managers as an investment analyst.

Michael is the Head of Operations at Afena Capital. Michael has been with the firm since inception and has nine years industry experience. At Afena Capital, Michael is responsible for the finance, administration, operational risk, IT and compliance areas of the business.

He holds a Bachelor of Business Science degree majoring in Finance and a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting from the University of Cape Town. He is a Chartered Accountant (SA) and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (ACMA)

He began his career at KPMG where he was responsible for conducting audits within the financial services industry. In 2004 he joined Compass Insurance Company Limited to head the financial and actuarial departments of the business. Michael’s experience includes various consulting assignments taken up both locally and in the United Kingdom.

At Afena Capital, Zahira is responsible for fundamental stock analysis within the Industrials sector. Zahira holds a Bachelor of Business Science degree majoring in Quantitative Management (with distinction) from the University of Cape Town and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder.

Mila holds a Bachelor of Business Science degree majoring in Actuarial Science from the University of Cape Town and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder.

Mila began his investment career at Sanlam Investment Management in 2004 as an equity analyst where he conducted fundamental research on small cap financial and industrial stocks. In 2008 he joined one of Old Mutual Investment Group's equity boutiques as an assistant portfolio manager where his responsibilities were focused on overseeing the small and mid-cap stock exposures across the portfolios.

He completed his articles at KPMG in Cape Town and was responsible for conducting audits across retail, manufacturing pharmaceutical and financial services industries. His audit experience includes assignments in the United Kingdom and United States.
